111. Book Review – Discrimination and Disparities by Thomas Sowell

Discrimination and Disparities by Thomas Sowell is a great look into how economic disparities that we hear a lot about play out in the real world. Statistics are a snapshot at a certain time, in a certain place, of a certain group. It isn’t the whole picture, let alone the whole story.

In this book, Sowell shows how economic and sociological statistics can be used to paint a very different picture than reality and gives you the tools you need to assess claims made from certain sets of data. The beauty of this book is its simplicity. He doesn’t hide a lack of understanding with complex syntax, but gets to the point clearly and succinctly.

Even if you’re not a economist or sociologist, you’ll understand what he has to say. This has been the inspiration for much of my thought around how we are tricked by economic statistics to not think of the people they represent.

And, in my most recent podcast episode, we looked at these effects more closely.
