The Fair Tax has made waves in Washington, but there aren't many people talking about it as an alternative to the Income Tax. Instead, many people are talking about Tax Cuts, Tax Reform or the Flat Tax. This book gives you all the reasons why we should turn away from the Income Tax and toward a consumption tax, namely the Fair Tax. The Holy Cross Order has a principle they call "educating hearts and minds." In a time when we know more than ever, and the discoveries of the wisest and smartest people are taught to high schoolers, it's amazing that people are so poorly prepared for life. There is no teaching the importance of family, morality, responsibility or other essential human ideas that make people successful at life- rather than just a career.
We all can fall to temptation, normally without even realizing it. The Screwtape Letters are a riveting series of story-like letters that show how people can be tempted to turn away from God. Whether or not you believe in God, this story can teach you how to beware the parts of human nature that steer you away from your purpose and towards self-destruction. Henry David Thoreau, a Transcendentalist and writer, retreated to the woods to live by a pond in the Northeast United States. Walden Pond, now famous thanks to Thoreau, inspired him to write this work that is a beautiful, cynical commentary on his time. His insights and observations on his time, however, are timeless. It's definitely worth checking out if you have any interest in Religion or Philosophy. Lao Tzu is an amazing thinker and prophet, and his wisdom is beautifully articulated in the Tao Te Ching!

This Ernest Hemingway book highlights a writer living an Upper Class lifestyle in Paris. There's action and fist fights as well as a good story of a broken love interest. As you know, at the Conversation of Our Generation, we are trying to build a dialogue and discuss the ideas that affect our society, culture, politics and philosophy. As we discuss the ideas that will define our generation, it is important to look back at the foundations of thought. This book is great for understanding how the dialogue developed and how these ideas are still relevant today.
Ever read something and forgotten immediately? Ever eaten something and been hungry not long after? Both of those leave you unsatisfied, yearning for more. Live by this quote and you'll fix that with reading--- sadly, Burke's advice doesn't apply to food.
