Quote: Edmund Burke

Ethical behavior is just that: behavior. Therefore, it is necessary for one's actions, or inactions, to be judged in order to decide whether one's behavior is ethical or not.

13. Talking Ideas, Not People

"Great Minds Discuss Ideas; Average Minds Discuss Events; Small Minds Discuss People." This quote is often attributed to Eleanor Roosevelt, but its origins are unclear. The truth in it is indisputable, however. As we look around us, it is apparent that the small minds talk about people, while great minds talk about ideas. This doesn't... Continue Reading →

QUOTE: John Paul II

Wise words from a wise man. I think the other problem with excuses is that they are often a lie told to oneself, which can have harmful effects should they come to believe their own lies. Lying to oneself distorts reality and hurts one's ability to act freely and within reality. To be honest with others is virtuous, but to be honest with oneself is truly righteous.

QUOTE: Dale Carnegie

When dealing with people, remember you are not dealing with creatures of logic, but creatures of emotion. -Dale Carnegie This has become readily apparent in today's society when almost every decision is posted on social media to be scrutinized and the internet allows for mistakes to be instantaneously recorded into history. People act emotionally, then... Continue Reading →

QUOTE: Hippocrates

With the onset of the opioid epidemic, one that is not new but rather resurfacing, it seems as though our society has forgotten this concept. We should seek to heal the spirit first through comforting and uplifting people, but we simply write a prescription for a useless pill and send them on their way. Evidence shows that not only do opioids not cure pain, but they don't treat it either.
We need to heal the body in conjunction with the mind and soul to heal the entirety of the individual.

QUOTE: John Paul II

This idea isn't new to Pope John Paul II, rather it even appears in Aristotle's Politics. The idea is that the individual must govern oneself, and become an adult who can govern a household, or family. That is how societies are built, from the bottom up, not the top down.

QUOTE: Maya Angelou

This quote by Maya Angelou rings true and brings peace of mind to all who pay attention. Read it, and give me your thoughts! Has this ever worked for you in your life? Let me know, then share or tag a friend who needs to hear this!

QUOTE: Stephen Hawking

Intelligence is the ability to adapt to change. -Stephen Hawking No one seems more adaptable than Stephen Hawking. He changed the entire scope and course of his life due to his disease, but it never held him back because he changed his tactics rather than his goals. To adapt to change is to be able... QUOTE: Jean-Jacques Rousseau

Insults are the arguments employed by those who are in the wrong. -Jean-Jacques Rousseau This has become apparent in recent years as hysteria has swept across the country, and even the world. The loudest voices rise to the top, and they shout down opposition, using insults to ostracize political opponents. But, no good idea requires... Continue Reading →

QUOTE: Queen Victoria

This seems to be a part of human nature. In a time when people seem to not be worried about their debt or long-term ambitions nearly as much as this weekend's plans or likes on their posts, it is obvious that the little things get to us.

QUOTE: Billy Graham

In light of Billy Graham's recent passing, here is one of his quotes! It gives insight into the nature of giving and receiving, and my thoughts on both.

QUOTE: George Carlin

This is a warning to everyone in the liberty movement. People who are conservative and don't want to see the system thrown away and replaced with a libertarian utopia are said to be driving too slow, while Anarchists and Volentaryists seem to be driving too fast. The thing is, both groups have the same goals for the most part and are headed the same direction. Instead of flipping each other off on the road, it would be better to caravan and use each other's strengths to move towards liberty.

QUOTE: W.E.B. Du Bois

The Holy Cross Order has a principle they call "educating hearts and minds." In a time when we know more than ever, and the discoveries of the wisest and smartest people are taught to high schoolers, it's amazing that people are so poorly prepared for life. There is no teaching the importance of family, morality, responsibility or other essential human ideas that make people successful at life- rather than just a career.

QUOTE: Fyodor Dostoevsky

Beauty is often mistaken to simply be good. But that is not always the case. This quote reminded me of a song by the Main Squeeze called "The Devil Was An Angel Too." In it, the lead singer describes falling in love and having his heart broken, but says he should have known better than... Continue Reading →

Book Review: Walden And Civil Disobedience By Henry David Thoreau

Henry David Thoreau, a Transcendentalist and writer, retreated to the woods to live by a pond in the Northeast United States. Walden Pond, now famous thanks to Thoreau, inspired him to write this work that is a beautiful, cynical commentary on his time. His insights and observations on his time, however, are timeless. As you read his book you'll see why this is the case. Watch the video below to see what I mean!
